Why

When it’s 7 degrees out, and you don’t feel like leaving your hotel, or apartment, Cathedrale should be the one place you should take that Uber.

If you’re looking for a dining experience that feels less like a meal and more like stepping into a cinematic masterpiece, Cathédrale in the East Village is your destination. Located within the Moxy East Village and operated by the powerhouse Tao Group Hospitality, this French-Mediterranean spot is trendy, yet and the food actually lives up to the hype of the decor.

Description

The Atmosphere

The first thing you notice is the “wow” factor. The main dining room features a massive, wire-mesh ceiling installation by Edoardo Tresoldi titled Fillmore. It’s a beautiful tribute to the neighborhood’s rock-and-roll history, giving the space a soaring, cathedral-like volume (hence the name). Between the ambient lighting and the dramatic architecture, it is easily one of the most beautiful atmospheres in New York City. Whether you’re on a high-stakes date or out with a group, the energy here is electric.

The Starters: Don’t Skip the Bread

While most people talk about the main courses, let’s talk about the real hero: the wonderful breadsticks and bread service. It sounds simple, but Cathédrale treats its dough with a level of respect. The bread is warm, crusty, and served with high-quality accompaniments that make it nearly impossible not to ask for a second round. It’s the perfect precursor to their Mediterranean-inspired menu.

Culinary Highlights: Fish, Pasta, and Beyond

The menu, crafted by Chef Jason Hall, strikes a delicate balance between coastal lightness and decadent indulgence.

The Fish: The seafood program is stellar.  I had the halibut which is my fav, but other food on the menu includes perfectly seared branzino or their salt-crusted preparations. The fish is consistently fresh, flaky, and seasoned to highlight the natural flavors of the Mediterranean.

The Pastas: The pastas are handmade and lean into rich, earthy flavors. The lobster orecchiette and the tomato-based rigatoni are standouts that provide that “comfort food” feeling within a high-end setting. Lobster is a YES for me.

Restaurant Week Value
If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to visit, you’re in luck: their Restaurant Week menu is still happening. This is arguably one of the best ways to experience a Tao Group property without the typical price tag. Even on the prix-fixe menu, they don’t skimp on portions or quality, offering a curated selection of their greatest hits.

Why You Should Go
Vibe: Sophisticated, dramatic, and upscale.

Food: Top-tier Mediterranean with a French twist.

Pro Tip: Make sure to explore the outdoor terrace if the weather allows—it’s a hidden gem in the East Village. Also, in the Moxy, which has several nice bar spaces and a game room.
