Resources

New York City offers a wide range of accessible transportation options, mobility equipment rentals, and ADA-compliant services designed to help individuals with limited mobility move around the city safely and comfortably. Whether you need a sit-down scooter, wheelchair-accessible transportation, or assistance navigating public transit, there are reliable services available for both short-term visitors and long-term residents.

Public Transportation & ADA Services

  • MTA Accessible Buses – All city buses are wheelchair accessible. Very good!
  • While subways are supposed to be accessible, I would say NOT. Most elevators smell bad and often don’t work.
  • NYC Ferry – Fully ADA-compliant ferries with boarding assistance
  • If you are a resident, you can get Access-a-ride but often a long process to get certified and times are not reliable.
  • Accessible Taxis:  There are accessible taxis in NYC.  Please click on the link to find out more.  You also need to download the CURB app.
  • Uber Wave:  Please read their website for more information

*Note: If you are an access-a-ride client, Uber now has Access-a-Ride services

Pro-Tips

  • Reserve mobility equipment early — especially scooters — as demand can be high.
  • Call attractions (museums, shows, restaurants) ahead of time to confirm ADA-accessible entrances, seating, and restroom access.
  • Plan transportation with accessible ride services rather than relying on standard subway stations, because not all stations have working elevators.
